CHRONIQUE DE PIKE RIVER
by Jef Asnong
A history of Pike River and surrounding area. Presentation and
co-ordinates.
“Chronique de Pike River”, published in French, relates the most significant
events which have marked the birth and existence of the English village of
Pike River first, followed by the French period.
To explore, to report on the history of Pike River is almost synonymous to
recall the history of a whole region. Portions of Pike River’s territory
of today have been part of almost all the surrounding municipalities and
parishes. There was also Notre-Dame des Anges, whose municipality does not
exist any more, only the parish. There are also two or three entities
which are not even neighbours any more, like Henryville and Clarenceville.
And even Stanbridge East!
It is the history of parishes of several faiths and of parishes which
ceased to exist. There were also several villages and hamlets which
disappeared such as Morgan's Corner, Malmaison, Hitchcock, Pike River
Landing and still others which were situated outside the current borders
of the village... Traces remain.
Pike River’s history is also part of the history of the seigniory of Noyan
and of the township of Stanbridge. It is part of the history of Lake
Champlain and necessarily a history that blends with that of the river
which bears the same name. A very beautiful river…
I am happy to be able to testify about women, men and children of
courageous generations.
And why should one think back about these people of the past, of forgone
times? Didn't they think about the future? This is reason enough.
Chronique de Pike River, is published in French by
Éditions La Soleillée.
The book contains 272 letter size pages and may be purchased at 25 $.
