Joseph Beaulé
1891 - 1967
Joseph,
the family's eldest, born March 8, 1891, will settle on land
adjacent to the family homestead. In 1916 he built a brick house.
The house being completed and ready to receive his sweetheart, he marries Marie
Boulet on June 5, 1917 at the Church of St. Adolphe de Dudswell. She was born
on March 26, 1893, daughter of Léonard Boulet and Aglaée Bouffard.
The couple will have twelve children: Léonard, Marie-Jeanne, Lucien, Fernand,
Jean-Paul, Marthe, Gilberte, Antoinette, Théodore, Thérèse,
Julien and Louise.
Marie
was a school teacher. At the beginning of their marriage she
becomes a secretary at the Parish of St. Adolphe in the service
of the pastor. I was told that she corresponded regularly with
family members in the religious orders. She had a very beautiful
handwriting, and even though she wrote her letters on the corner
of the kitchen counter while the children were having breakfast,
(so that they could mail them on their way to school) she never
made a mistake.
In
addition to the work on the farm, Joseph practices the professions
of woodworker, carpenter and vetinarian. A few times, he will
also go to work in the United States. Early on, he will be involved
in parish movements. In the early 1930's, he will be co-founder
and manager of the local telephone company. He will play the
same role for the Agricultural Cooperative of Dudswell (dairy).
He will become president of the school board and the credit union
and will occupy parish council functions, secretary of the U.C.C.
and also a municipal council member. In 1945, he is employed
by the Social Service Ministry (pension division) for Wolfe County,
a position he will occupy until 1960. As behind every great man
there is a woman, he will have succeeded in all these tasks thanks
to Marie who always assisted him.
In 1927, Joseph acquires from his brother Georges the original
homestead and moves into the house where he grew up. Lucien remembers
that he was happy about this move because now he would have much
less further to walk to school at the end of the road.
