Every spring, the West Island of Montreal Chamber of Commerce (WIMCC) accepts nominations for business excellence in the West Island community in thirteen categories. Winners are announced in June at the WIMCC annual Accolades Gala. In February this year, The Becket Board of Governors nominated the Becket Players in the category of "Exceptional Community Involvement" in the WIMCC Accolades Competition. In April we were notified that we had placed as "Finalists" in our category, along with Bijouterie Robert Picher and Boutique de Mariage Punta Chiara Inc. (two other deserving finalists).
In May, a few Board of Governors met with three Accolades Jury members for the "finalist interview". The interview was supposed to be held in the organization's offices - but Becket Players doesn't have an office ... our "office" is Arena #2 in the DDO Civic Center. The BOG's walked the jury panel through the arena and explained what the Becket Players are all about - volunteers selflessly giving of their time for the needs of children. The BOG's explained how it is volunteers who transform a cold, damp arena into a warm, inviting theater setting; how it is volunteers who rehearse hundreds of hours to perform for 8 nights every spring; how it is volunteers who sell tickets, make and serve food and beverages, set tables, design sets, make costumes etc. The BOG's explained that Becket Players entered this competition to raise our profile in the business community in the hopes that it would translate to greater donations, ads, and corporate sponsorships in the future. The BOG's explained that all of this is done for one reason and one reason only - the kids.
At the WIMCC Accolades Gala in June, the Becket Players Troupe were recognized as winners of the Accolades 2007 Award of Excellence in the category of Exceptional Community Involvement. It was a magical evening for the entire organization. It must be understood that this recognition is not just for the Becket volunteers of 2007. It is a recognition for the hard work and unselfish dedication of EVERY Becket Player who has volunteered their time and talents over the past 33 years. It is a recognition for the work we do for the children. May we continue our work for many years to come.
