CGSC IO Class of 1993

"Build it ... and they will come!"  Last update as of 7 January 2009

Our 20th Anniversary is at the horizon (2013), contact me if you are interrested in organizing it...

This site is dedicated to our dear friends from the CGSC IO Class of 1993 and replaces the Newsletter I used to publish on a yearly basis. Most IOs from our Class have joined the Net but if you are new to the web and have tracked down this page, please drop me an email so that I can add you to the list.

EDITOR'S MESSAGE

Dear friends, welcome once again at our CGSC IO 93 Web Site ( pages.videotron.com/bend1/ ) that I'm keeping up to date as often as I can based on your input. The best way to reach me for timely input and update remains through the Internet at bend1@videotron.ca . Other pertinent information can also be found through the IO Section of the CGSC Web Site.

The year 2008 is already coming to an end and I would like to take this opportunity to give you a bit of news and pass on my best wishes for the Holiday Season.  I'm still in charge of the Canadian Operational Support Command and have been travelling extensively around the World in support to the different Canadian Forces missions while representing Canada in key Multinational Logistics forum such as QLF, SNLC, US COLD and PASOLS.  Having had the chance to Command this new Organization for more than three years, looks like I will have to move on to something else next summer. I will most likely remain in the Ottawa region but the exact position has yet to be determined.

Marjolaine has decided to retire from work at the Museum of Civilizations this past summer in order to go back to School for a two year program in Home Decorating. She has just completed the first Semester and is enjoying it tremendously. She is with a group of 21 students for which the ages vary from 20 to 60 years old. This makes it very interesting in terms of group dynamic and she often has to use her motherly skills…  The oldest son Francis is now 22 and is working at a Service Call Center for a Software Company specialized in building repair costs estimates for different Insurance Companies. He enjoys it very much even though it’s a bit remote from his hardware specialty. He still lives with us but has a girl friend in El Paso, Texas, USA. He’s been there three times already and she’s supposed to visit us in early Jan 2009. The second son Pascal is now 20 and like his mother, has left work to go back to School. He’s at College (CEGEP) studying in Building Technologies and enjoys it very much. Funny enough, he’s at the same School as his mom and often travels with her. He also has a girlfriend who spends a lot of time with us at our place and it’s getting pretty serious.  The youngest son Frederic is now 17 and is completing his last year in High School. He is having great marks but is still not sure what he’s going to take at College next year. We would not be surprised he ends up at the same CEGEP as Marjolaine and Pascal…

Marjolaine and I are still competing in Ballroom Dancing, focusing more and more on the 45+ Championship categories at Home and abroad.  At the last Canadian Championships, we finished 4th in Latin and 5th in Standard.  We also finished 1st in Standard at one of the competition in Quebec this past October and are working hard this Christmas to get prepared for the Quebec Championships in January 2009 and the Canadian Championships in April. We have not competed outside the Country this year but are looking at a few in 2009 in the USA and then potentially Germany.

As you can see, the Benjamin Family is doing very well and we truly hope it’s the same for you all. We wish you a great Holiday Season and a very happy New Year 2009. Cheers, best of luck and hope to see you soon.

CLASS REUNION

Our 15th Anniversary is now something of the past (2008) and no one has volountered to organize a Class Reunion associated with this event. Dimitrios from Greece was interrested at one point but I haven't heard from him since he came to my place in Nov 2004. If you are interrested to organize the next Class Reunion, as is potentially the case for Martin Tumenta and Rose from Cameron, please get in touch with me as soon as possible

Our 10th Anniversary Class Reunion of 2003 was organized by Koen and Rixt from the Netherlands. This reunion proved to be a great success with, in attendance, Erhard, Helga and Susanne from Germany, Guido and Marie-Claire from Belgium, Andrej and Dina from Russia, Goldie and Pritti from India, Antonio and Marina from Italy, Stuart and Antoinette from UK, Andrew and Helen from New Zealand, Pierre from France and finally, Marjolaine and I from Canada.  Most members arrived by noon on Thursday the 29th of May to experience the first theme; ‘getting settled in The Hague’. After a light lunch at the four stars Crown Plaza Hotel, we went by bus to the Mauritshuis in the NL government quarters where we were offered a guided tour of the Royal Collection of paintings including masterpieces from Rembrandt, Vermeer, Jan Steen and Frans Hals.  This was followed by the visit of a miniature town called Madurodam, Holland’s most famous attraction made of a large collection of objects at a 1:25 scale. Built in the honor of Capt Maduro 50 years ago and improved on a yearly basis since then, Madurodam displays the most impressive examples of Dutch architecture from around the Country. We completed this first day sponsored by Daimler-Chrysler Netherlands with a great dinner at a first class restaurant called the Keuken van Waarde.

Given that one third of the Netherlands is under sea level, the theme for the second day was: struggling the sea.  We started the day with a bus ride to Kinderdijk, a beautiful historic site part of the Unesco world heritage that contains all of the relevant 18th century waterworks technology such as dikes, reservoirs, pumping stations, administrative buildings, and a series of impeccably preserved windmills. We enjoyed a boat tour along the canal and then had the chance to visit the inside of a windmill in full operation. We then had lunch in the bus as we moved towards the province of Zeeland to visit the Neeltje Jans Delta Works project. Upon arrival, we experienced and old Dutch tradition with snaps and fresh uncooked hearings, not recommended for light stomachs, and then had a quick briefing before visiting this very impressive dam designed as a storm surge barrier to prevent inland floods from the sea, as the one they experienced in 1953 and that killed more than 4000 people. This new barrier is approximately 20 km long and is protecting 8 million people from the sea.  We then returned to The Hague via Rotterdam in order to freshen up and get ready for another great dinner hosted at the Pier Scheveningen restaurant by our sponsor for the day, Thales Netherlands.

The third day was spent in Amsterdam, the capital, under the theme: The Golden Age: exploring the world.  We spent the morning as a group at the Van Gogh museum and then had the afternoon to ourselves in downtown Amsterdam for shopping, touring or just walking around in what used to be one of the richest city in the world in the 16th and 17th centuries. Souvenir hunting was a top priority for most of us but others went to see some historic sites, museums, Anne Frank House and, of course, the famous Red Light District. We completed the evening with a very special Indonesian style dinner at the Indrapura followed by a boat tour in around the famous canals that makes the Amsterdam city centre so special.

The fourth and last day was organized under the theme: Teamwork; intensifying our bond, a secret event that proved to be a 25 km bicycle rally in around The Hague and Wassenaar. Tears started flowing early that morning since only 12 of us could participate to the rally, the others having to leave early due to flight schedules.  Those who did participate in the rally were split into three teams and clearly enjoyed a beautiful bike ride under a sunny bright sky and temperatures reaching up to 28°C.  The scenery along the way was just fantastic and changed constantly from old urban network to beautiful rural settings, culminating with a brunch at a beach resort.  Team B (Italy, France, Germany) finished first but as far as I am concerned, should have been disqualified since they got lost and took way too much time to complete the rally. Team B (Belgium/Canada) finished second and Team C (Netherlands/UK) finished third. Whatever the results, we had a great time and this was a true reflection of the whole reunion. Koen and Rixt did a fantastic job organizing this four-day event and strangely enough,  we all reunited as if it were yesterday, the day we all departed Leavenworth back in 1993.  On the other hand, going apart after such a great time together also proved to be as emotional and as painful as back then. But one thing is for sure, we are all looking forward to the next reunion. Where will it be and when??? Volunteers let me know since we need as much lead time as possible.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Argentina (Nothing to report)

Australia
The last news I’ve received from John, Sue goes back to Jan 08 and was as follows;
John is still with Suncorp but has changed his role, moving into the technology area. Sue has also changed roles with a great opportunity to take up the role of CEO for a large community-based early childhood organisation - Lady Gowrie Queensland. A particular benefit has been some interstate conferences and travel – and opportunity to catch up with friends in a child-free environment. Samuel and Georgia turned 13 at the end of September, and have just completed their first year at High School. Both Georgia and Samuel have established a great set of friends, are doing well academically and enjoy going to the school. Both children continue to enjoy a range of extra-curricula activities. Georgia continues to dance with passion and this year again successfully completed exams in both classical ballet and hip hop!  Samuel continues to pursue his love of music, including singing with the wonderful youth choir – Brisbane Birralee Voices.  In June, his choir toured to Korea as part of the World Vision Children’s Choir Celebrations. He spent a week performing with choirs from around the world as well as experiencing life with a Korean family. On his return he entered a very busy time with a number of performances including performing at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre again, this time with the Queensland Pops Orchestra.  Samuel continues to play viola and sing at school, this year performing in the Senior Strings Orchestra and Senior Choir. Samuel changed from soccer this year to try his hand at Australian Rules (a football game unique to Australia but has much in common with Gaelic Football). The club, the West Junior Bulldogs, and the team mates Samuel played with were great and he really enjoyed the year. Nevertheless, having tried something new, Samuel has decided to return to soccer next year. 2007 also marked a significant milestone for Sue and John as they reach their 25th Wedding Anniversary. To celebrate, Sue and John joined two other couples celebrating their 25th Wedding Anniversary on a trip to Singapore and Vietnam. They managed to take a tour of the Battle of Long Tan, which was an important battle in the history of John’s Infantry Battalion 6 RAR. The Casey’s can be reached at  johnbcasey@optusnet.com.au [Jan 08]

The last news I've received from Wadud and Rina goes back to Mar 07 and they were doing quite well.  Wadud reached the rank of MGen three years after graduating from the National Defence College in India.  He had the chance to command an infantry division for close to 2 years but was then forced to go into early retirement due to a change in government even though he had, in theory, 11 more years to serve.  He completed a MBA and went on to work in that domain. Rina and the two children were doing quite well.  They can be reached via the Internet at  wadud@intrepidbd.com [Mar 07]

Belgium
I've just received Christmas Greetings from Guido and Marie-Claire. On top of this, Marjolaine and I had the chance to meet and dine with Guido's family in Belgium this past April 08 as Marjolaine joined me for the QLF in Portland UK and then the SNLC in Brussels. Marjolaine and Marie-Claire did a lot of touring and shopping together as Guido and I joined them in the evening for dinner Chez Vincent and then at their place. We had a great time and it was very nice to also meet with Marijke (youngest), Elke (oldest), her husband Dieter and their son Wout. Guido is still a MGen working at the Material Resources Direction and  Marie-Claire fully enjoys her role as a grandmother and “advisor” for their daughters. Dieter works with his father in the (real estate) project development business. Elke is teaching part-time and Wout started preschool in May. Marijke is also teaching and is finally recovering from the consequences of her bicycle accident 9 years ago. The Andries can be reached via the Internet at  guido.andries@pandora.be [Dec 08]

Finland

I've just received some news from Markku. He was promoted to LTG in June and is now third in command in their Defense Forces (DCOS Ops). He just married four weeks ago after a decade long condideration and a five year long engagement period. He and his lovely wife Merja just had a wonderful two week honeymoon trip in Phuket, Thailand. Merja is the General Manager of Finnish Sauna Society , and the General Secretary on International Sauna Association. She is a mother of two teenagers, Keny and Inka, who live with them in Kirkkonummi, Finland. They built a house six years ago, and enjoy life almost in countryside, as well as gardening. As almost all other Finns, they have a summer cottage which is one of their greatest common passions. Marianna is doing great in her long and challenging studies in Manchester U.K. She is finalizing the doctorate studies in economics, but is not sure of what to do afterwards. She is not actually very interested in returning to Finland, and has seen enough rain in U.K. South America has been one of her favourites, and Washington D.C. is still among her considerations. Arja is still living in Kerava, where they hosted our First Class reunion, but Markku have not had many contacts with her. Markku can now be reached at markku.koli@mil.fi [Dec 08]

I just had a quick phone call from Erhard in Bonn who was just about to be promoted MGen before moving to Berlin where he will have the chance to be closer to his son Markhus who is now 24 and working there. He told me the sad news that him and Helga are not living together anymore. He can be reached via the Internet at  erhard.buehler@t-online.de  [Jul 08]

I've just got a phone call from Susanne Benning in Dec 08 plus a lengthy email. She lives in the northern part of Germany close to the Baltic Sea and close to the city of Kiel. Her husband Arne works in Lübeck as a negotiator of mortgage in a finance company. She is still working part-time as a bookkeeper in a medium-sized company which builds and repairs conveyor belts and gum pipes especially for big ships. In November they celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary and made a wonderful ferry cruise to Oslo. Their daughter Sophie is nine years old and is in her last year of elementary school. She is doing fine, loves to paint and handicraft. Their son Nils is seven years old and is in 2nd year of elementary school. He is also doing fine and likes to play soccer. Given that Arne is a very active handball player, they spend a lot of weekends at gyms and soccer fields. Susanne loves to walk the dog and do special trips with her best girlfriend. Last year they travelled to Dubai (UAE) and were met by Nabeel from Kuwait who was on a duty trip. As you can see, the whole family is doing very well.  I've met with Dimitrios and Maria as they were visiting us in Ottawa in early Nov 04.  They came to our place in Gatineau for dinner and we had a great time. Dimitrios was in England for a while, attending the Royal College of Defense Studies in London, and then got promoted to BGen in March 2002. He commanded two different Brigades and is now back to their National Headquarters in Athens as OPI for Joint Doctrine and the potential establishment of an Joint Experimentation Centre like we have here in Canada. Maria is working as a Notary and resides on the Island of Lesvos where they are building a very nice retirement house with a great view on the Mediterranean Sea.  It should be ready in a few years and Dimitrios mentioned that it could be an ideal site for our next Class Reunion (2006-7). Their son is finishing University in Business/Management and their daughter is starting hers in Law. They can be reached via the Internet at  panagiotou@mail.com  [Nov 04]
