What is WARBIRDS

WARBIRDS; THE HISTORY OF AIR COMBAT is series of games addressing many facets of air combat from 1914 to the present day. WARBIRDS uses an accurate three-dimensional flight model that allows players to recreate air combat engagements using a two-dimensional game map and counters.

In the WarBirds system, a different game scale is used for each era, allowing the same movement and combat rules to be used. Each era will have a section in the rules binder to allow fast reference. This means you can play one engagement during 1916, jump to 1940, The Battle for France, then 1952 over MiG Alley, and go Down Town in 1964 using the same basic flight rules and APCs that use the same layout. The bottom line is one set of rules, anything that flies.

Scales

The game is divided into two levels, the Tactical Scale (TAC) game and Operational Scale (OP). At the TAC level, each counter represents an individual aircraft and a true “dogfight” can be played with several aircraft. The OP scale expand the scale to allow larger numbers of aircraft to engage in combat and time to be compressed relative to the TAC scale game. All two levels can be combined to form an accurate representation of air combat from World War I to the early seventies.

Playing Warbirds

WarBirds is played in game turns. Each game turn is divided into phases in which players sequentially perform actions such as moving counters or resolving combat. Each phase in a game turn must be executed in a specific order, termed a “Sequence of Play” (SoP). The actions the players may take in each phase will depend on the game scale being used.
