As promised.. here is my latest CD-ROM review.

Riana Rouge (Black Dragon Productions, $39.99)

Riana Rouge is by far one of the more hyped adult programs I have encountered, and subsequently, the most trashed by mainstream reviewers.

The game starts with a mousy secretary encountering a case of sexual harassment by her boss. She fights back and gets shoved out of a window for her troubles. Instead of falling to her death, however, she lands in the middle of a strange temple, with a beautiful woman telling her that she is this heroine called Riana Rouge, and that she must save the world from an evil tyrant. But to get to the tyrant, she must first collect three crystals in three different worlds. Each world is wrought with puzzles that you must help Riana solve through her choices and her emotional states.

Gillian Bonner created, produced, and stars as the title role. Fans of Playboy also know Gillian as the April playmate for 1996.

This is a mouse-driven program. No keyboard commands at all, other than naming the saved files for future use. You have to be pretty attentive at times, listening for clues and hints as you guide Riana through her adventures. Depending on the emotional state you put her in, she could either make the right choice, the wrong choice, or the choice that gets her killed in a bloody heap.

While I enjoyed seeing Riana move about in her various erotic outfits (especially the one-piece she wore in the jungle world), I found the few love scenes to be a tad unrealistic. Riana appears to be the only character willing to be naked in the love scenes, which cuts down on the credibility of the scenes. Mind you, I don't mind seeing Riana naked, but having a love scene for the sole purpose of seeing her naked makes it gratuitous even for an adult program.

This is an extremely bloody game. I'm surprised that the mainstream reviewers didn't like this program considering it has the standard share of violence of any "mainstream adult" program. But then again, this also involves sexual themes and nudity, which instantly places it in the "taboo" category. As an adventure game, it's on par with some of the best mainstream games out there. However, the heavy amount of blood and gore does cut down on the sexual appeal. (I am told that the planned Riana Rouge II will involve more sex, which hopefully will give Black Dragon an all-5 rating.)
