
Over the course of about 12 months, Mr. Gosselin worked with a client that had acquired another organization. He reviewed work processes and communication and reorganized the company on a Management Committee basis to better enable the acquiring company to cope with the increased need for management time. He co-chaired the weekly management meeting and guided the management team in a consistent follow – up of all actionable items. He also provided guidance in the processes required to develop policies and priorities for the merged company. Additionally, he facilitated some of the sales and team meetings.
Case: Preparing for agreements that involve significant benefits and change
HGSG devised a process to enable a municipality to plan for the pre-implementation and implementation of ten agreements with a provincial government. HGSG designed the Total Team Strategic Planning Methodology. This planning process combined 28 separate team planning sessions (10 different teams) organized and facilitated by HGSG, with a thorough cost/benefit analysis of all section plans that resulted from the team planning sessions. The client was thus able to proactively take the lead in its negotiations with the province and obtain a majority of the concessions that it had sought.
Case: Coaching for an owner contemplating an acquisition and a career change.The owner of a successful mid – sized consulting firm was interested in acquiring a manufacturing plant and ceasing his consulting business. But he wanted a sounding board for this major decision. Mr. Gosselin reviewed personal and business objectives, strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, as well as analyzed the company to potentially be acquired. The analysis resulted in the owner vigorously renewing a commitment to his business but adjusting his approach to help him achieve his desired objectives.
Case: Executive / business coaching for the CEO of a mid-sized firm experiencing difficulty in adapting to changes in the company’s external environment.This CEO felt the need for guidance in developing a stronger and more focused management style. He also needed to expand his fundamental business knowledge and skills in order to help him deal with change and gain increased support from his Managers. Mr. Gosselin and the client drafted an impact map that outlined the characteristics and knowledge required for someone in his position, where the client stood in terms of these characteristics and skills, the actions that would lead to improvement and the required outcomes. The client and Mr. Gosselin met once a week to review progress and the “homework” assigned to the client the previous week. The client significantly enhanced his confidence and his ability to lead his team in a focused manner.
Case: Transition plan to facilitate the change from one generation to the next for a successful manufacturerIn conjunction with transitional efforts made by the President designed to guide the younger shareholders, HGSG facilitated a team strategic planning process that included both generations. This enabled the company to agree on a longer-term transition plan. This plan included a detailed analysis of the company’s likely future external and internal environments. Using this background as the planning base, the transition team established the company mission and financial objectives and devised action plans to help achieve a smooth transition.
Case: Feasibility study relating to the investment of $ 250 million in a new facility.Before making such a significant investment, ownership of the Montreal Expos wanted to have a better idea of a) the future of the industry, b) the financial impact that such an investment would have on the company and c) the feasibility of the project given a) and b). HGSG guided the EVP and his assistant, first in planning the project, then acting as a sounding board and guide while implementing the analysis, and finally on how to present the analysis to the board of directors.
Case: Development of a business plan and acquisition of funds for a new private MRI clinic.HGSG wrote the business plan and negotiated a hybrid loan/lease arrangement that enabled the new MRI clinic to obtain the necessary financing for the MRI machine and related equipment with limited personal guarantees. The clinic has been operating successfully for a number of years.
Case: Guidance in the negotiation of a $ 70 million bank term loan agreement and a $ 12.5 million guarantee for a client making an acquisition in the health care field, and the monitoring of the acquired company on behalf of the guarantor.This very successful wholesaler needed guidance in negotiating the financing for this significant acquisition and employed Mr. Gosselin to ensure that the terms and conditions were the best available and consistent with Canadian banking practices. Over a two year period, through regular visits, HGSG also monitored the actions and progress of the company acquired to ensure that it remained within the limits agreed to by the bank.
Case: To help a company reorganize.In this case, HGSG advised Management on all facets of the business to enable it to develop plans and policies and set up an infrastructure that would enable the company to satisfy new regulatory and business requirements. HGSG developed and wrote all the company policies and job descriptions in addition to chairing weekly management meetings. HGSG also created and helped implement a revised planning and budgeting system, the management reporting system and the communications and workflow procedures.
Case: Research and analysis related to enhancing a client’s relationships with various federal and provincial government funding agencies.This assignment required that HGSG interview representatives from various government bodies and funding agencies as well as client representatives to determine what the requirements were to improve communications between the client and the funding agencies. HGSG designed questionnaires and used these as the basis for his interviews. His report provided a number of findings and methods for improving the communications.
Case: Market research and segmentation related to the potential introduction of leasing products for the Business Development BankThe Bank wanted to know if it could successfully introduce a leasing product. HGSG designed appropriate questionnaires and then surveyed a number of potential users as well as competitors to determine that indeed a leasing product would be a welcome addition to BDC’s product offerings.
Case: Research and analysis for Statistics Canada related to the formulation of pricing schemes for the sale of statistical dataStatistics Canada needed information that would enable it to finalize the cost-recovery prices it would charge for data captured in the census. HGSG designed questionnaires and interviewed a number of individuals, the results of which confirmed the appropriate pricing.
Case: The design and writing of a thirty-page internet product on the Financing of the SME.This mandate was done for Industry Canada’s Steps to Competitiveness, (located on Strategis, Industry Canada’s freely accessible website) to enhance SME’s knowledge of the options available to finance their businesses.
Case: Complete operational analysis.This operational assessment required that HGSG analyze and report on all parts of the organization. The resulting 37 page report and 110 appendices covered mission, objectives, organizational structure and governance, programs and services, management and administration, communications, marketing, management information systems and technology, planning, budgeting, finance, accounting, control, as well as future human and capital resource requirements and recommendations to deal with all organizational inadequacies.
Case: Design a performance related compensation and benefits packageHGSG undertook several different mandates for this particular client. In this case, the client wanted to institute a new compensation program, so HGSG first guided the owners in determining the key future drivers of company success and then acted as the liaison between the company and a compensation/benefits expert. The resulting compensation package ensured that all staff focused on key success measures.
