Brian
Damage`s musical endeavors have been shaped by creative ideologies as much as
by musical style. He first came to public attention as "Master of
Chaomonies" with the industrial-experimental collective Phycus. Phycus
released countless lps, cds and cassettes on Damage’s own Musicus Phycus label.
Strongly allied with the Neoist art movement, Phycus performed at music and
performance art festivals such as 7a*11d in Toronto, Violence of the
Imagination in Brighton, UK, and Orzcy Kurt in Budapest, Hungary.
In
2000 Damage formed the Moog trio The Unireverse, an exploration of Post-Retro-Futurism,
a vision of the alternate musical realities proposed by the original Moog
futurists of the 1960`s. The Unireverse performed across Canada and Europe,
including a legendary gig at the SONAR Festival in Barcelona.
Throughout
the 00`s Damage ran Total Zero Records which released records from the Canadian
Underground and Avant-Guard.
His
current project, Discipline X, is driven by formalised compositional rules,
referred to as compositional essentialism. Different pieces have different sets
of rules, but some recurring elements are found throughout: minimal human
intervention, looping and phasing techniques. Using just a Moog, turntable,
loop pedal, effects and an extensive music and sound library as source
material, minimal elements are transformed into dense, evolving
soundscapes. Discipline X draws from
his all of Damage`s previous projects, ranging from noise to lounge.
