The hand modelling technique

Besides the lathe turning method which needs a mechanical auxiliary, there exists numerous clay-shaping techniques that only require two skilful hands and a few small tools. Each of these methods has its own interest. To mention only those that are most commonly used there is the " coiling " which consist of creating an object with long rolls of clay coiled in circle layer upon layer until the approximate shape is attained; the flat slab modelling technique offers endless possibilities with regard to forms and functions of the object that is to be made; the " thinning " method which is the basis of the hand modelling technique; and last there is the carving in the mass which allows to create human figures and different forms and shapes found in the nature. Within the same creation the artisan, can call upon those various techniques, and as well pieces that are lathe turned and hand modelled.

Though being a slower method, hand modelling permits to create in actual fact all forms and shapes fancied. Once the technical aspects are mastered they will leave room to creativity and imagination
