Experience Newfoundland 2003:
Motorcycle touring in Newfoundland

Though I've been to Newfoundland several times in recent years, I keep wanting to go back, and this time is no exception.

What makes this place special for me? Offhand, I'd say it's the uniqueness in terms of the geography, the culture, the history, and most importantly, the people. But there may be something more elusive at play, more difficult to define.

What is certain is that motorcycle travel is a wonderful way to discover all that Newfoundland has to offer. As a quick look at any atlas will confirm, Newfoundland is a sizeable province. If you want to experience Newfoundland as opposed to just ride a motorcycle through it, you might consider the following:

Everything is some distance off the main highway. In fact, staying on the main highway ensures that you will see and experience very little. One of the few exceptions to this rule occurs when riding through Gros Morne National Park on your way to the northern peninsula. This area is quite scenic. But even here, straying off the main road yields significant rewards.

By taking a little time to experience it, you will add substantially to making your trip a memorable one.

How do you do this, you ask? Simple. . .

First, accept that this is a big province. Setting a realistic time frame will add much to your enjoyment.

Slow down a smidgen and plan an itinerary that allows you to take some time to go off the main highway. Tour around, stop often, and strike up conversations with locals (very easy).

You'll soon get into a different rhythm. Newfoundlanders are bound to leave a lasting impression on you.

My preferred touring approach in Newfoundland is to establish a home base for a couple of days and tour the surrounding area. Then I move on. This makes all the difference! It allows me to get a feel for the local community. As you'll discover, each is quite unique.

ps: There are many opportunities for live entertainment on the West Coast of Newfoundland. These are often presented in restaurants, bars, small theatres, or other venue. Whether they be in the form of live skits, story-telling, theatre, re-enactments, folk music or other, they all wonderfully convey part of the unique Newfoundland culture and spirit. Just ask around. It's a great way to spend part of an evening and will surely add a special dimension to your trip!

Enjoy!!
