An excerpt from The Caged Tiger

For A.J.M. Smith

Like any animal coming into the world
  unknowing, ignorant of what is now to come
                              or how it happens
  man has believed always that something is hidden,
            that the real is not seen.

  The transcendental then is merely the unknown;
  but this does not change its meaning,
  for if it were known it might add to our reality
                                as much as those things
  dreamed of by mystics, saints, and visionaries.

  We gnaw at the mystery, extending knowledge.
