TSM Tips
Manual addendum 20/03/00.

Clear all tags FAST!
The TSM tag functions use a secondary database to store and manipulate selected records, therefore when a large selection is requested it may take time to create. (especially apparent on older computers) Go to the TSM Setup, and from the Defaults box, select the checkbox for 'Clear tags on startup' and click OK. It doesn't matter If it was already selected. The selection clears almost instantly (Tagged=0) when you return to TSM.

Filter results
When the filter is applied, it applies records in the TAGGED window. This means that if there are any records that match the filter settings, they will also be affected.

Listen priority
When the listen function is activated, the file selected for playback is chosen according to the priority listed below, assuming that the filename(s) are the same as the one found in the record.

  • Work directory (TSM setup)
  • File directory (record)

If the filename is not found in either of these directories, TSM then proceeds to the archive section where TSM attempts to extract the file from the archive according to the priority listed below.

  • Archives (TSM setup)
  • Archive directory (record)

Multiple databases
In the TSM setup, all outside connections can be set up in such a way that TSM can also perform as a librarian for almost ANY files that you may have on your system!. The following is a short list of parameters that can be used to customize your system.

  • which database is to be used *
  • Archive controls
  • File types
  • Playback program
  • Record filter setup

* The TSM database consists of 3 files;

  • SEQ.DBF - the database file
  • SEQ.CDX - compound index file
  • SEQ.FPT - memo file (lyrics and midi information)

These files are the heart of the system and are normally found in the \TSMW\DATA directory. When the DATA directory is changed via the TSM setup, the user is then prompted with the create files screen. If you choose "create", the 3 files are then created in the directory the user specifies.

Finding / eliminating duplicates
Many sequence merchants use a coding system for their midifiles, making it very easy to enter the same file twice under a different filename. Using the DETAIL window, here's how to spot duplicates or renamed sequences, without even having to listen to them.

  • Open the BROWSE and DETAIL windows.
  • Examine the MIDI data (channels, patches, resolution) for the different versions.
  • Verify the SIZE field for each version. *
  • Highlight the dupe and DELETE it!

* When data is transferred between disks, a slight difference in the file sizes may occur. The MIDI data panel in the DETAIL window remains the most accurate indicator for duplicates.

Triple click
While in EDIT mode, a double-click with the left mouse button will select the current word. However, a triple-click on the same word will select the entire line of text.

Wildcard search
The FIND function from the TEXT menu is primarily used while in EDIT mode. Here's how the find function can also be used while browsing the database. This function is not indicated in the TSM manual.

  • Open the Browse window.
  • Press Control-F
  • Enter your search criteria
  • Press Control-G to find the next occurrence.

Note: Tag functions cannot be applied to search results using this method.

TSM bugs (and solutions)
Nothing is perfect...
I can't print a 2nd page of lyrics.
While TSM is running, run NOTEPAD.EXE from the START menu. Switch back to TSM, then from EDIT mode, go to the lyrics field and follow these 5 steps;

1. Control-A (select all)
2. Control-C (copy) the lyrics to the clipboard
3. Switch over to Notepad
4. Control-V
(paste) ALL the lyrics
5. Print (from Notepad)

I can't print to a file.
You must install the " Generic / Text Only " print driver for the version of Windows that you are using. This driver is shipped as part of both Windows 3.x and Windows 95 / 98 operating systems.

NOTE: The work-around for the previous bug also works on this one

An error occurs while running the registration program. (Win 3.x)
In order to register The Sequence Manager on a 4 MB system running Windows 3.x, you must first exit the program, and then run the TSMWREG.EXE program from the directory where TSM was installed. << Program Manager / File Menu / RUN >>. Enter your name and your TSM serial number in the space provided, and once the message REGISTRATION COMPLETE! is displayed, TSM will attempt to run the main executable which will cause the memory error to occur again. Press any key and the registration process will be complete. You may then run TSM normally.

Note: The default install directory for Windows 3.1x is C:\ProgramF\TSM\
