A LITTLE HISTORY
According to the Société de développement de Montréal, “Rue du Port, located East of Saint-Pierre Street, is a small one-way street going from rue de la Commune to Place d'Youville, in the same axis as Saint-Nicolas street. Originally, the street was called Dumont , as Eustache Lambert Dumont built it in 1779 to access land he obtained through inheritance from his wife. The land had belonged to Louis-Hector de Callière, a governor of Montréal at the time of New France .”

“Starting in the 1790s, this area of Old Montréal developed as harbour facilities. For a number of years fur traders had been storing bark canoes in two large purpose-built hangars built for this purpose. The Blondeau and Berthelet docks were at the end of the street, upstream and downstream. Harbour activities continued to grow and led to further developments. In 1801, the street was widened westwards. Renamed rue du Port in 1816, this little street is a reminder of the times when the Pointe-à-Callière shore was the port of Montréal .”
